ABN — Australian Business Number

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is the 11-digit identifier that sits at the front of every Australian business's dealings with the ATO and other businesses. It's free to apply for, but applying for one when you don't actually need one — or running one without understanding the obligations — creates real problems at tax time.

1. What an ABN actually is

An ABN is a single business identifier issued by the Australian Business Register. It's how the ATO, suppliers and customers know you're carrying on an enterprise. The number itself doesn't make you GST-registered, doesn't give you any licence to trade, and doesn't replace personal-tax obligations — it just tells the system that a particular business or individual is in business.

2. Who needs one

You need an ABN if you're carrying on an enterprise — a business, profession or trade — in Australia. The threshold for what counts as 'an enterprise' is lower than people think: regular freelance work, sole-trader trades, rideshare driving and recurring side hustles all qualify. Casual one-off work for a friend usually doesn't. If a customer or platform asks for your ABN before paying you, that's a strong signal you should have one.

3. How to apply

Apply online at abr.gov.au — it's free. You'll need a tax file number, proof of identity, and a clear description of what your business does. Approval is usually instant for straightforward applications. If your circumstances are unusual (overseas residency, ABN previously cancelled, complex trust or company structure) it can take longer and you may be asked for further documents.

4. GST and the ABN

Having an ABN doesn't automatically register you for GST. GST registration is separate and only mandatory once your business turnover hits $75,000 in any rolling 12-month period (or $150,000 for not-for-profits). Below that threshold, GST is optional. Most sole-trader tradies, rideshare drivers and small consultancies in Melton choose to register anyway because their customers expect tax invoices.

5. Cancelling an ABN

Cancel your ABN when you stop carrying on the enterprise — not when business is just slow. Inactive ABNs get cancelled automatically by the Tax Office after a few years of no activity. Re-applying later is straightforward but causes friction with platforms and contracts.

6. Common mistakes

· Holding an ABN as an employee 'just in case' — the ATO can deny deductions if no genuine enterprise exists · Quoting an ABN that's been cancelled — customers must withhold 47% from your invoices · Forgetting to update ABR details when address, structure or business activity changes · Using a sole-trader ABN for income that should belong to a related Pty Ltd · Assuming the ABN replaces income-tax obligations — it doesn't

7. When to talk to us

If you're not sure whether your work needs an ABN, whether to register for GST, or whether a sole-trader vs Pty Ltd structure suits — that's a 15-minute conversation. We do it free for prospects, and we'll quote a fixed fee if you want us to handle the registration end-to-end.
