IAS — Instalment Activity Statement
An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) is the cousin of the BAS, used by businesses and individuals who have PAYG or other instalment obligations but aren't GST-registered. It's a shorter form covering only the payment-instalment items.
1. Who lodges an IAS
Three main groups: GST-registered businesses that have monthly PAYG withholding obligations between BAS quarters, businesses or individuals with PAYG income-tax instalments but no GST registration, and entities with FBT instalment obligations.
2. What's on it
The IAS reports any combination of: PAYG withholding (W1, W2), PAYG income-tax instalments (5A), FBT instalments (6A) and any deferred GST instalments. There's no GST on sales / purchases sections like a BAS — those only appear if GST registration is in play.
3. Lodgement timing
Monthly IAS due the 21st of the following month for medium withholders. Quarterly IAS aligns with BAS quarters but with the same lodgement dates as BAS (28th of the following month). Tax-agent extensions usually apply on the same schedule as BAS.
4. Common scenarios in Melton
· A small business with one or two casual employees — quarterly IAS for PAYG withholding
· A landlord with significant rental income — quarterly PAYG instalments via IAS
· A high-income individual taxed on capital gains the prior year — quarterly PAYG instalments while waiting for the next return
5. Common mistakes
· Not realising you've been put on PAYG instalments after a profitable prior year
· Lodging zero IAS without varying the instalment when income drops materially (you're entitled to vary down)
· Ignoring an IAS on the basis that there's nothing to pay — the ATO still expects the form
6. When to talk to us
If you've received an IAS and don't know what to do with it, or if PAYG instalments don't match your actual income for the year, we can vary the instalment to a more accurate number — saving cashflow. IAS lodgement is included in our quarterly BAS service for $90/quarter or quoted separately at the same rate.
