WORTH KNOWING

Why the balance sheet comes first

A company or trust return is only as good as the balance sheet behind it. If the bank, loan, GST and director accounts don't reconcile at 30 June, the profit is wrong and so is the tax. We reconcile every balance-sheet account before the return is drafted. It's slower than typing figures into a form, and it's the reason the numbers hold up when the ATO asks.

Trusts: the decision before 30 June

A discretionary trust has to decide who receives the year's income before 30 June, in writing. Miss it and the trustee can be assessed at the top marginal rate on the lot. We schedule the distribution decision in June, model the options with you, and prepare the minute. The 30% minimum trust tax from 2028 changes the arithmetic, not the deadline.

Division 7A and the director's loan

Money drawn from a company that isn't salary, a dividend or a loan repayment is a loan to you. Unless it's repaid or put on a complying agreement by the lodgement date, the ATO can treat it as an unfranked dividend. It is the most common problem we find in small-company books, and it is fixable when it's caught before the return is lodged.

FAQ

Common questions.

A single company or trust with clean, reconciled books: the financial statements and the income tax return. The quote rises with turnover, transaction volume, the number of entities and the state of the file. Whatever it is, it's fixed in writing before we start.
