Call, with no documents
You tell us roughly how many years and what kind of income. We tell you how the process runs and what it will cost per year. No judgement, no lecture.
We look at the ATO record
Once we are linked as your agent we can see every outstanding year and what the ATO already holds for each. You get a written plan.
One year at a time, oldest first
Each return is prepared from pre-fill and whatever records you have. Refund years usually come first; the money helps with the rest.
Penalties, debts, done
We ask for remission, set up a plan for anything owing, and confirm with you when the last year is lodged.
Bring this.
Don't have all of it? Start anyway. We'll tell you exactly what's missing, once, and much of it we can pull from the ATO directly.
- Representing you in a dispute that has reached the AAT or a court, which needs a tax lawyer
- Negotiating a debt that is already with a debt collector on the ATO's behalf, beyond setting up the plan
- Financial counselling for the money side, which we refer to the National Debt Helpline
- Business activity statements for the same years, which are quoted separately under BAS and GST
- Photo ID for agent linkage
- Your tax file number, or the last notice of assessment you can find
- Any ATO letters, especially default assessments
- Payment summaries or income statements for each year
- Bank statements for years with business income
- Centrelink payment summaries
- Interest and dividend statements
- Receipts or bank records for work expenses
- Vehicle logbook or kilometre estimate
- Rental property records if you own one
The fear is usually bigger than the bill
Most people who are years behind are owed money for at least some of those years, and the ATO does not usually issue a late lodgement penalty where a return produces a refund or a nil result. The years that do owe tax have a capped penalty, not an open-ended one. Our overdue returns guide sets out the current penalty figures, how interest works and what remission grounds the ATO accepts.
Why oldest year first
Losses, offsets and carry-forwards flow from one year into the next. Lodging the newest year first means the ATO assesses it without the history, and the earlier years then have to be lodged anyway and the later one amended. We lodge in order, and the ATO's records come out clean.
The 31 October trap
If any prior year was still outstanding at 30 June, the current year's return is due on 31 October, not the extended agent date most people expect. Clearing the old years restores the agent program for the current one. The dates and the lead time are in the overdue returns guide.
What it costs, and why there is no premium
A late return takes the same work as an on-time one, so it costs the same: the standard per-year price on the pricing page. The extra work on a catch-up is the ATO contact and the remission request, and we include that. You get every year quoted together before we begin.
Common questions.
As far back as the ATO's records go, which for most people is every year since they first had a tax file number. Very old years without pre-fill data are prepared from bank records and your own figures.
